GMTV's Ben Shephard and Dr Hilary Jones to help rebuild a school in Haiti with Charity Challenge.

22/06/2010

On 12 Jan 2010, an earthquake recording a magnitude of 7.0 hit Haiti. It’s epicentre lay just 10 miles to the west of the country’s capital, Port au Prince. Already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti’s plight was further exacerbated by the widespread destruction caused by the earthquake.

An estimated three million people were affected, with more than 230,000 killed, 300,000 injured and in excess of a million made homeless. With over 80% of the country living below the poverty line, Haitians are in dire need of both immediate and long term aid.

With more than 50% of the population under 18 years of age, education is a major issue, and Charity Challenge have teamed up with Plan UK to help rebuild a school supported by Plan Haiti.

To help with this rebuild, GMTV’s very own Ben Shephard and Dr Hillary Jones are planning to fly to Haiti with Charity Challenge to get their hands dirty working alongside the local community.
The challenge will be documented by GMTV and aired on the six month anniversary.

In the next couple of weeks, we hope to have dates for members of the public to join future builds in Haiti to help rebuild additional schools.
No experience of building is required, just enthusiasm, motivation and a desire to help make a difference!

Further updates will be put out via the website, Facebook, and twitter.
