responsible tourism

The Charity Challenge mission statement:

At Charity Challenge we see Responsible Tourism as much more than a travel industry buzzword. We think carefully about how each trip affects the environments in which we operate, and aim to minimise this impact at every step. Through offsetting all of our participants' carbon emissions, using local people and resources wherever possible, travelling in small groups and supporting a local project on every challenge, we ensure that every challenge we run benefits both the charity being supported, and also the local communities with whom we interact.

The impact of tourism is already immense and it will increase. The travel industry can bring many benefits to local communities, including an injection of cash and employment for local people, preservation of native habitats and indigenous wildlife, and cultural exchange. However, without care, tourism can also have a negative impact: destruction of natural habitats; diversion of scarce resources; disturbance of wildlife; and the violation of tribal peoples' rights.

"Charity Challenge is very good at considering the local environment and local customs and encouraged the group to do the same at all times." Lee-ann Orwin, Great Wall of China

Comments from Queen's Award for Enterprise in the field of Sustainable Development :

“The company, which provides a series of inspiring team challenges that develop and motivate staff, aimed at providing assistance to the developing world and fundraising for charity, is to be commended on producing an application that shows evidence of a thorough and committed understanding of all aspects of sustainable development, both within the company itself and in its core business activities.  It is clear that sustainable development is at the heart of the business. The examiners were thoroughly impressed with the company’s commitment to social sustainability; in this rapidly expanding market, it represents outstanding performance and is an example to others.”

Our Allies:

We also work alongside organisations such as the International Porter Protection Group, Rainforest Alliance and Climate Care to ensure that our expeditions are beneficial for everyone involved, and don’t have a negative impact on the environments and communities we visit. Have a look at these websites for more information on what these excellent companies achieve in their daily activities.

Keep in touch :

As always, if there is anything that you feel we can do to improve our responsible tourism standards and further benefit the local communities in which we operate, we welcome your feedback. Please get in touch at bookings@charitychallenge.com.

Happy reading!
