ESSENTIAL INFO
Tanzania is home to three of Africa’s greatest mountains: Longido, Meru, and Kilimanjaro. Your challenge is to climb them all!
You begin with Mt Longido. Situated in the heart of North Tanzania’s Maasailand, close to the Kenyan border, Longido is a sacred Maasai mountain, and, at 2,700m, also an excellent acclimatizing climb! You’ll ascend in 2 days, taking the time to admire Longido’s unique low altitude fauna and flora, as well as its stunning summit views of Meru and Kilimanjaro.
From Longido, you trek through savannah and lush rainforest to your next challenge, the majestic summit of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second highest peak. Significantly higher than Longido, Meru will test your endurance and stamina, and help prepare you for your final test, Kilimanjaro.
For this itinerary, we tackle Kilimanjaro via the lesser-used Umbwe Route. This is a steep, rapid ascent to Kibo Peak. Starting in the rainforests and plantations of Umbwe, you’ll head up the impressive Great Baranco Valley to Barranco Camp. From here you’ll be able to see your goal, Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s main ice-capped peak. You continue to the summit via the beautiful Southern Flank, Barranco Wall and Barafu Route.
The expedition has been carefully planned to ensure that you acclimatise as much as possible to the altitude and maximise your chances of making it to the summit of each peak.
