The challenge

  • Be the first to explore Asias next big trekking destination
  • Trek through dense tropical forest
  • Negotiate mountains, waterfalls, caves, swamps and rivers
  • Discover village life and explore traditional Khmer culture
  • Optional extension to Angkor Wat

This ten-day trekking challenge in the South West of Cambodia, takes you through a region of both natural beauty, but also bloody history. Following the fall of the dictator Pol Pot in the 1970s, the Khmer Rouge soldiers took to the Cardamom Mountains and continued to fight for a further two years. Many villagers here lost their lives. The region remained closed to tourists for decades but has recently opened up.

Your challenge starts in the capital city of Phnom Penh with time to visits the city’s famous sites, including the Old French Quarter as well as the bustling street-life and lively waterfront area, giving you an introduction to Khmer history and culture. You will then transfer by road and river to the remote village of Chi Phat at the foot of the Cardamom Mountains in Koh Kong Province. From here you will trek for five days in collaboration with the Chi Phat community eco-tourism project (CBET) and the Wildlife Alliance.

The challenges involves trekking through hilly terrain still largely covered by dense tropical forests, numerous waterfalls and caves, and a 500 year old burial site. You will get the chance to discover village life, explore the traditional culture, food and handicrafts, and witness the flora and fauna of the tropical forest including the Siamese crocodile, Asian elephants, tigers and leopards.

At the end of the challenge, you will return to Phnom Penh for your flight home, or can take advantage of an optional extension to incredible temple complex of Angkor Wat.

"I had the most amazing time, with some really special people. It was great just having a small group as we all got on well right from the start. Marc was a really good leader and all the other people involved in our trek couldn't do enough for us.

My Charity Challenge experience has been a life changing one and I very much hope to do another one soon."
