The Rocky Mountains, also known as the Rockies, are a major mountain range and the largest mountain system in North America. The Rocky Mountains stretch 3,000 miles (4,800kms) in a straight-line distance from the northernmost part of western Canada (British Columbia and Alberta), through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado, to New Mexico in the United States.
The Rocky Mountains have been home to indigenous tribes including the Apache, Arapaho, Bannock, Blackfoot, Cheyenne, Crow Nation, Flathead, Shoshone, Sioux, Ute, Kutenai Sekani, Dunne-za and more.
The Rocky Mountains are also a wildlife paradise. They are home to elk, moose, pronghorn, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, black bears, grizzly bears, coyotes, lynxes, and many other animals. The Alberta-British Columbia foothills forest is home to the largest herds of moose in North America.
