ESSENTIAL INFO
This tough challenge which aims to cross the spectacular Lasermo La pass (5400m) takes place in the Nubra Valley, situated 150kms north of Leh, the capital of Ladakh, India. The Nubra Valley lies on one of the former strands of what was known as the Silk Road, ancient trading routes bringing goods from East to West and back again. Ladakh's terrain is varied and beautiful - it is one of the rare places on earth where you can see the splendid beauty of sand dunes adorned with camels alongside mountains topped with snow peaks. Today it offers unparalleled trekking opportunities and scenic landscapes.
Although staggeringly beautiful, your trekking route will start at an altitude of over 4000m reaching a maximum altitude of over 5400m on the fifth day of trekking (almost as high as the summit of Kilimanjaro) making this an extremely demanding and physically arduous trek and a serious challenge to even the fittest of trekkers. Even though acclimatisation time has been factored in, you should take the extreme altitude of this itinerary into consideration when planning your training schedule (see our fitness training notes for further information).
You will spend evenings camping by small hamlets, observing local village life before taking on the trek ascending to and crossing the lofty heights of the Lasermo La pass (5,400m). The spectacular scenery throughout this trek will be a truly deserved reward and make all the hard work seem worthwhile. The pass offers unsurpassed views of the Karakoram, Zanskar and Ladakh range of mountains and valleys on either side. This is a most wonderful trek through an impressive gorge, across pastures and meadows with summer flowers and the chance of seeing marmots and maybe barals. You will end your challenge at Phyang village where you can visit its famous Buddhist monastery.
