Mental Health Charity

Back Up exists to transform the lives of everyone affected by spinal cord injury. That means delivering a range of services to build confidence and independence back into people’s lives, and offering a support network when it is needed most. It also means challenging perceptions of disability – that life with spinal cord injury can be a full and active one. Many of our volunteer and staff team have been affected by spinal cord injury, and have a strong understanding of the challenges an injury can pose. We support over 1,000 people a year – of all ages and injury levels – to lead the life they want. We are there at every stage, and we are there for families and loved ones too. Our outreach team deliver vital wheelchair skills training in hospitals and spinal centres, and contact people once they return home, offering an understanding ear and practical advice. Our residential courses help people with a spinal cord injury build confidence, give them a supportive network and opportunities to learn life skills that allow them to be as independent as possible. Our Back Up to Work course and education inclusion service support people as they find their way back to work and education. Our mentoring service matches people with a spinal cord injury and their family members with someone who has been through the same situation. They are there to listen on a regular basis and help people move forwards with their lives.

We run 1000 vital projects across the UK, including counselling for children who have been abused, fostering and adoption services, vocational training and disability inclusion groups. Barrett's Wessex, officially “Wessex friends of Barrett's Oesophagus Campaign”, works with that national charity researching the pre-cancerous condition, Barrett's Oesophagus, whilst supporting those affected by persistent heartburn, Barrett's Oesophagus or Oesophageal cancer through a website, newsletters and meetings across the greater Wessex area and raising funds for local initiatives.

Our children might not be able to complete the kind of physical challenge you're about to embark on but they are no strangers to the mental strength needed to fight Barth syndrome. We're working hard to find treatments and one day a cure for our children who have this rare and life threatening condition. Help us support families, raise awareness and fund research into life saving treatments for this rare condition.

Our research goal - to prevent cancer and develop better diagnostic techniques and treatments - ultimately will improve patient survival and enhance the quality of life for those with long-term disease. We also use our expertise to teach and educate students and professionals about the science of, and the gold-standard clinical approach to, cancer, and to engage our local population and make the often difficult subject of cancer accessible to anyone that requires or is interested in our research.

BCDH is one of the busiest re-homing centres in the UK, caring for over 1,600 unwanted, abandoned and abused pets every year. Through our adoption scheme we aim to find every animal a new loving home no matter how long it may take. Although a Branch of the RSPCA, we rely entirely upon donations, legacies and fundraising events to meet our running costs.

Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone 365 days a year for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

We provide support to people who have a heart condition called Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD), raise awareness of the SCAD among health professionals and the general public, and fund research into this under-diagnosed condition.

Beatson Cancer Charity supports people affected by cancer, every step of the way. We make the journey easier by transforming the way cancer care is funded and delivered. We provide support services, and fund specialist posts, research and innovation projects and educational initiatives.
