Meet the rest of your team at the airport for the long-awaited night flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
After touching down at Kilimanjaro Airport, you’ll be transferred to Big Rock Camp in the foothills of Mt. Longido. This is one of the few high peaks in the region that is not volcanic. If there is time, the group will have an acclimatisation trek in the African bush during the afternoon, to get familiar with the environment and equipment.
Conditions are likely to be very hot and dry and unlike anything you are used to, so take today to ease in gently.
Accommodation: Camping
The day begins with a 20km drive into the bush to start today’s trek. From here it’s a tough 22km trek towards the majestic volcano: Kitumbeine. Passing Maasai villages and herdsmen, you catch your first glimpse of Ol Doiyno Lengai (2,960m), the most sacred Maasai mountain in the region. The trail en route to Kitumbeine Village is sandy and sometimes rocky. About 2km beyond the village is Kitumbeine Camp, your overnight camp.
Accommodation: Camping
Today the environment gets hotter and drier, but the reward is fantastic game viewing. The trail is rocky to start and becomes increasingly dusty, so bandanas or face masks are very useful. Look out for zebra, gerenuk, giraffe and countless birds along the way. The trek today and tomorrow crosses a low saddle between Mounts Kitumbeine and Gelai. Midway between these great volcanoes is the old swamp of Nagarirat – now a dust bowl.
Tonight’s camp is high up, with awe-inspiring views over the surrounding country.
Accommodation: Camping
Prepare to be tested as the trek climbs into the foothills of Gelai. This section is very challenging with a lot of uphills on a trail that is rocky underfoot. The night will be spent at Gelai Village campsite, a few minutes’ walk from the village itself.
Charity Challenge has helped to fund and build new classrooms for the local community here.
Accommodation: Camping
Today you will rise early to trek across untamed bush towards the Sunken Crater (22km). Crossing a beautiful plain marked by dead volcanic vents, your efforts bring you closer to the escarpment of the Rift Valley, rising from the bush up to the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands.
Today’s trek will be the hottest so far, so wear and pack sun block, reflective clothing and wide-brimmed hats. However, temperatures can fall dramatically after dark.
Your camp tonight is on the rim of the crater, where you can admire the starry skies above.
Accommodation: Camping
Breakfast will be served very early, after which it’s time to bid farewell to the support team and head to Arusha. The guide will join you for lunch and some shopping, after which you’re free to relax by the pool or explore some more. In the evening you will enjoy a celebratory dinner to reward your achievement.
Accommodation: Hotel
There’s still time to see anything you may have missed in Arusha this morning. Later in the afternoon, the group will transfer to the airport for the overnight flight back to London.
As you touchdown in the UK it’s time to head to arrivals to find your family and friends – but not before swapping details with your challenge companions.
