Day 3, Mon 08 Jun 2026

Trek From Big Rock to Kitumbeine (approx. 22km)

After an early breakfast, you will drive to Big Rock via Longido Township, situated in the foothills of the striking Mount Longido—one of the few prominent peaks in the region that is non-volcanic in origin. Expect hot and dry conditions today, which may contrast sharply with the terrain and climate you’ve trained in previously. From Big Rock, your support vehicle will transfer you approximately 25km further west into the bush, toward the starting point of today’s trek near Kitumbeine. The trek covers approximately 22km, leading you through a semi-arid landscape toward the majestic Kitumbeine Volcano. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional Maasai villages and herders, with your first glimpses of the revered Ol Doinyo Lengai (2,878 m) – the sacred "Mountain of God" for the Maasai people. Today’s trail is a mixture of sandy, rocky, and dusty terrain, with the final 7km characterised by porous, dusty soil before reaching Kitumbeine Village.

Kitumbeine Camp lies approximately 2km beyond the village, where you will overnight. A packed lunch will be provided along the route. Your journey today offers not just natural beauty, but a cultural immersion into the ancient Maasai (B,L,D)

Day 4, Tue 09 Jun 2026

Trek from Kitumbeine to Gelai (approx. 18km)

Today begins with a vehicle transfer from Kitumbeine to the Nagarirat plains. From this point, you will commence your trek towards Gelai. The journey takes you into the foothills of Mount Gelai, and it is one of the more demanding sections of the trek.

Expect steep uphill climbs over rocky terrain, often under intense heat — a true test of endurance. Tonight, your campsite will be set up near Gelai Village, just a short walk from the local community. Dinner and Overnight. (B,L,D)

By now, you will be captivated by the mystical, eternal beauty of this region, which is known as “the Cradle of Mankind.”

After your trek, you will meet the WWF Tanzania team and start to witness their programmes and have the chance to interact and get involved, ready for a full day at the project tomorrow.
