Are you an Individual, Corporate or Charity interested in having your own private group departure?
If yes, please email info@charitychallenge.com and one of our team will be in touch to help with your enquiry.
Our Charity Challenge representative will be at the airport to assist you with the check-in and any last minute questions before your flight from London to Johannesburg. The flight will take approx. 11 hrs and your flight tickets will be issued to you at the airport.
You will land in Johannesburg and catch your connecting flight to Durban. Here you will be met by your Charity Challenge leader who will take you to your hotel outside Pietermaritzburg which is approximately 1.5 hours. This evening, your challenge leader will brief you on any local health and safety procedures you should follow and they will be your point of contact throughout the duration of the challenge. You will also receive a briefing on the work of Thandanani and what to expect over the next few days.
Every morning, breakfast will be served early at the hotel, and the team will be taken to the building site at an agreed time. Upon arrival at the site, you will be fully briefed at the beginning of each working day on the challenge ahead and all safety and training aspects will be covered.
Equally important is the introduction to the community you will be working alongside. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with your new environment. There will be ample time for you to ask the construction supervisor questions and to get to know the rest of your team including the community you will be working with.
Over the working week your challenge will involve working in teams to help build three houses for the community. Tasks may involve digging foundations, chipping rocks, lifting and laying blocks, rendering walls, mixing cement, concrete or render, sieving sand, moving materials around the site and setting window or door frames.
Everything you do on a construction site, whether it is sifting sand, removing or placing dirt, mixing cement by hand or passing buckets of mortar to another team member, is helping the children and their community in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This is an inspiring process to be involved in, also because you will also be raising money to support Santander’s chosen charities; Age UK and Barnardo’s.
Often the work involved is very labour-intensive and includes:
You will never be asked to do anything outside of your physical capabilities and team work will be encouraged at all times.
If you feel you cannot do what you have been asked to, please speak to your construction supervisor or team leader and they will do their best to find you something else.
The days will be scheduled around the local working hours and appropriate temperatures throughout the day. Lunch, water and snacks will be provided on site and shared with all members of the building team. In the evenings you will have the chance to eat and relax at the hotel or visit a local restaurant. There may also be an opportunity to enjoy local cultural activities. On your last night you will visit a restaurant for a celebration of your achievements.
You will check out and travel to the airport after lunch where you will depart for Johannesburg and catch your connecting flight to London.
You will land back in the UK and be able to share your experiences with all your friends and family!
