RESPONSIBLE TOURISM

June 4, 2025

At Charity Challenge we acknowledge that it is our responsibility to ensure that we do all we can to contribute to creating better places for people to live in (in the countries where we operate), and better places for you to visit. We’re proud to have donated over £500,000 to local community organisations in our host countries, helping to support medical, educational and environmental projects, and to carbon offset projects around the world.

Following some feedback from a recent challenge, we have updated our pre-challenge information and Responsible Tourism Policy to place a greater emphasis on respecting, protecting and enjoying the outdoors.

Our Responsible Tourism aims are to:

  • Use locally owned services whenever possible
  • Respect, protect and enjoy the outdoors
  • Encourage transparency with our ground teams about how responsibly they manage our tours
  • Support local community projects in the countries in which we operate

We also have the following policies: Child Protection; Animal Welfare; International Porters Guidelines.

Overseas Donations

Over the years, Charity Challenge has given back to the communities that we work with, through supporting projects that empower its people to learn and develop new skills.

For example, Charity Challenge has donated £30,000 so far to the International Collaborative for Science, Education, and the Environment (ISCEE), a non for-profit organisation – which works primarily with the Maasai in Tanzania. The International Collaborative is dedicated to “A better life for rural Africans and a cleaner environment for all“.

Charity Challenges donation’s to ICSEE helped to launch The Cypress Hill Institute in Tanzania – a community-focused training and research center, serving as a hub for education, innovation, and empowerment, particularly for Maasai women and rural communities.

Our Impact in Action

Read ICSEE President and Founder, Robert Lange’s words on their project mission and how Charity Challenge’s donations have helped it so far:

“ Charity Challenge were involved in the important transfer of a remarkable campus of approximately two and a half acres and three buildings to our Tanzanian non-profit.

At one point, we realised that the campus could be more powerfully used, and we gathered funds from Charity Challenge and other donors and built a dining hall and a library/computer center.  We also remodelled the hostel and began planning residential programs for vulnerable girls.

In a society like the Maasai, or any other poor rural group, girls face some challenges that are almost unimaginable for Europeans.  But we are very happy to announce that the Cypress Hill campus, with funds from various donors and Charity Challenge, and with the leadership of Tanzanian women with exemplary wisdom and courage, will be the site for new and breathtaking innovative support for girls facing serious challenges.”

UK Donations

Each year, Charity Challenge also makes a donation to a different UK charity, as a gesture of appreciation towards the community, for allowing our continued use of facilities for some of our most popular UK challenges.

In December 2024, Charity Challenge donated £1,500 to Cylch Meithrin Dolbadarn a Welsh-medium playgroup providing local children with wonderful experiences to play, learn and grow through the medium of Welsh.

“We are a charity based organisation that is run by a committee of volunteers. The Cylch has been closed for two years but recently re opened in September. We have to fundraise to be able to stay open so your donation is very valuable to us. The Cylch Dolbadarn is a crucial setting for the younger children of the village and is an opportunity for them to learn through play and make friends. We are very lucky that we have oppointed two very experienced members of staff that give the children wonderful experiences to play, learn and grow through the medium of Welsh” Lois Jones, Cylch Meithrin Dolbadarn
