WHY THE OUTDOORS IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO TALK

February 6, 2025

#TimeToTalk Day

Today marks Time To Talk Day – a day dedicated to “the nations biggest mental health conversation”. It aims to get people actively talking and listening to each other regarding mental health. It’s about learning to feel more comfortable opening up, reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues and taking those first steps toward improving mental health for everyone.

There are lots of ways to encourage and approach these kinds of talks, including sharing #TimeToTalk on social media. Visit the Time To Talk Day website for their full range of tips and resources.

Benefits of walking in the outdoors

Here at Charity Challenge, we understand how beneficial getting active in the great outdoors is to your mental health.

Exercising outdoors is proven to help boost your natural feel-good endorphin and dopamine levels – plus there’s the added benefit of being out in fresh air, surrounded by nature. Spending time in nature can be highly restorative – by helping you relax and increasing your energy levels, mental agility and focus.

So, if being active and being in nature are both proven to help towards keeping your mind and body healthy – then combining the two is a win-win!

How signing up for a Charity Challenge gets you walking and talking

Our open challenges are available for anyone to sign up for – meaning you can sign up alone or with friends (under a team booking) if you wish. Completing a Charity Challenge with a friend or a group provides a great chance to open up to each other, to get chatting and help clear your mind.

If you join solo, don’t worry – you’re not alone! The majority of our participants actually sign up alone – and have a fantastic time on our challenges regardless. Our participants often form new bonds with like-minded people whilst on our challenges. As you’re all tackling the same terrain, you urge each other on when it gets difficult – and conversations naturally form! A lot of our participants have amazing stories to tell too – about why they signed up, why they’ve chosen to fundraise for a particular charity and what it means to them.

We offer a wide range of challenges to choose from, in the UK and overseas. Our challenges also range in difficulty level (challenging, tough and extreme) and activity type (from mountain trekking to kayaking) – meaning there’s something for everyone and plenty of beautiful landscapes to inspire you to get talking!

Charity Challenge also operate charity exclusive challenges, meaning you’ll be joining a group of similarly motivated fundraisers, who all have the same cause close to their heart. This can be especially rewarding to those who may struggle to open up about areas of their life affected by what their chosen charity supports.

Our challenges are not a race – they’re an uplifting and encouraging space for individuals and groups to learn to believe in themselves, be proud of their fundraising achievements and inspire others to do great things.

So, whether you have your own story to share, want some quality reflection time or if you’re always open to listen – a Charity Challenge is the perfect space for you.
